Homemade donuts—we’ll stop there. Is your mouth watering? While they may sound intimidating, these are actually quite easy

It’s no secret that we love maple syrup around here (an ode to our Canadian founder), so we’ve made maple the star of these flavor-packed donuts. We’ve complemented the maple with some of our favorite baking spices: cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg and just a whisper of clove. It’s warm, comforting, and will make your whole house smell like a bakery. Isn’t that the dream? The only equipment you’ll need is a couple of donut pans. We recommend you go with non-stick, which makes for an easy donut removal and a quick clean-up.

Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
    4 tbsp softened butter
    1/3 cup vegetable oil
    1 tsp vanilla
    1/2 cup maple syrup
    1/3 cup brown sugar
    2 1/2 cup flour
    1 1/2 tsp baking powder
    1/2 tsp baking soda
    3/4 tsp salt
    1/4 tsp nutmeg
    1/4 tsp cardamom
    1/2 tsp cinnamon
    1/8 tsp clove
    1 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup pecans, toasted and crushed (for topping)
    Flaky sea salt, optional
    For Glaze
    1/2 cup milk
    1 tbsp maple syrup
    1 tsp vanilla
    1 tsp corn syrup
    3 1/3 cup powdered sugar
    1/4 tsp salt

Instructions

step 1

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

step 2

In a large bowl, whisk two eggs then mix in butter, oil, vanilla, maple syrup and brown sugar.

step 3

In a separate bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and spices. Stir to combine.

step 4

Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients in three parts, alternating with the cup of buttermilk. Mix until smooth, but don’t overwork.

step 5

Lightly spray the wells of a donut pan with cooking spray. Spoon the mixture into each of the wells, filling until just beneath the top of the pan. Gently tap the bottom of the pan against the counter to even it out.

step 6

Bake for 10 minutes.

step 7

Allow to sit and cool for a few minutes, then transfer the donuts to a wire rack to finish cooling.

step 8

While the donuts cool, make the glaze. Set up two saucepans on the stove. Fill one halfway with water and set to the lowest temperature. You’ll also need a large glass bowl that can securely fit on top. In the other saucepan, add the milk, maple syrup, corn syrup, vanilla and salt—stir to combine. Heat on low until warmed through but not boiling (about 5 minutes).

step 9

Slowly whisk in the powdered sugar until smooth. Carefully pour the glaze into the glass bowl and place it on top of the hot water. Dip each donut into the glaze halfway. While the glaze is hot, top with crushed pecans and flaky sea salt. Repeat until all the donuts are glazed. If the glaze begins to seize, simply apply more heat and whisk. You can also add a teaspoon of milk, which should smooth it out.

step 10

Allow the glaze to set and enjoy!
